Because I'm a Chick-Fil-A insider (I'm kind of a big deal), I received an e-mail last week that I could get a preview of their new Spicy Chicken Sandwich, before it's introduced to the public next week. I had to sign up for a time slot at my nearest Chick-Fil-A (which happens to be 36 miles from my house, in lovely Regency Mall located in nearby Racine, WI), and today I loaded the family up in the car for a little Memorial Day road trip. (We also stopped by the Jelly Belly store in Pleasant Prairie, WI on the way home. Last year, we took their "Factory tour" which is actually a "Warehouse tour" but we got free jelly beans out of it so I'm not complaining).
We were not the only people who had made the trek from Illinois. Another family (including 3 kids) had driven up from Chicago, and the dad in that family was also a pastor (we're so predictable). I got my sandwich with pepper jack cheese, no pickles (because I hate pickles) and sat down to check it out.
So what did I think? It is definitely spicy. The pepper jack made it more so. It's got a "buffalo" type flavor, but a little hotter. I talked to the owner of the store, and he said Chick-Fil-A was trying to make it different enough from the original sandwich, so the "kick" was intentional. Since I am able to get Chick-Fil-A so infrequently, I doubt I will order it again, but if I'm in the mood for a little spicy number, I will definitely consider it. It's hard to improve on the perfect chicken sandwich, and they haven't. But if you like things spicy, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
